Alphonsus was the son of Thomas Alexander Ball, who was from Oromocto, Sunbury, New Brunswick, Canada, and whose father was Irish; and of Martha Guanella, whose own parents, Thomas Guanella and Catherine Levi, emigrated to the U.S. from Lombard, Italy. Patricio’s great-grandmother Loretta was the daughter of James W. O’Brien, whose father was Irish, and whose mother was Canadian, and also of Irish descent; and of Johanna Patricia Barrett, whose father was from County Cork, Ireland, and whose mother was also of Irish heritage.
