Place of Birth: Birmingham, Alabama

Date of Birth: November 14, 1954

Ethnicity: African-American, some English

Condoleezza Rice was the first African-American woman, and the second African-American, to become Secretary of State (she was appointed by president George W. Bush). Condoleezza is the daughter of Angelena (Ray) and John Wesley Rice, Jr., a minister.

Condoleezza’s parents were both black. A DNA test by the show “Finding Your Roots” stated that she is of 51% African, 40% European, and 9% Native American descent, although another test listed her as 0% Native American.

Condoleezza’s paternal grandparents were John Wesley Rice (the son of John Wesley Rice and Julia Head) and Theresa Hardnett (the daughter of Sylvester Hardnett and Cora). Julia was believed to be the daughter of Burr Woodward Head, a white plantation owner, who had English ancestry, and of his black slave.

Condoleezza’s maternal grandparents were Albert Robinson Ray III (the son of Albert Ray and Angeline) and Mattie Lula Parham (the daughter of Walter Parham and Emma).
